I would be a bit worried in Sweden if Korg decided to release Gadget as a Win/OSX suite with VSTs similar to what Native Instruments has done with Komplete, just on a smaller scale. While I think very, very highly of Figure, Propellerhead's attempt at making an iOS app based on their flagship product feels like a really nice toy next to Korg Gadget. While Reason 7 is a monster that requires more than what iOS can deliver at the moment, Korg Gadget feels like what a mobile version of Reason could have been. I also wish there was a seamless way to have Gadget synths play in Ableton (or your favorite DAW) but until someone comes up with that solution for all iOS products we will have to make due with what we have.Īn interesting take away from this is that Korg has out-Reason'ed Propellerheads at their own game here. Things such as samplers or rex-players/slicers would be nice, but aren't missed if you ask me. It may be lacking some minor features like a true DAW on a PC/mac might have, but I think those will be incorporated down the road in a 'reason-like' fashion with new synths.

I'm interested in seeing them further develop this app, so far its hit all the marks. Korg has made a neat little package for mobile song writing or lazy couch/bed beat making. The midi editing is more than adequate and is a joy to use, it feels natural. I can't believe I'm getting this out of an iPad. First of all, with 15 synths, the sounds are amazing. After several decent attempts that missed the mark a bit, Korg has really done a bang up job with this one. Recently my feelings towards iOS music making have changed with Korg Gadget. There's hasn't been an app where I could comfortable sketch out ideas and comfortably port them into Ableton or any other DAW. Some have come close, notably GarageBand, FL Studio Mobile and more recently Cubasis, however the aforementioned apps felt lacking and felt more like they were shoehorned onto iOS.

Regarding DAWs, iOS has truly been lacking in anything intuitive or frankly even usable. Although not all DAWs, some of my favorites include Garageband, Lemur, Figure, Animoog, Alchemy, & Touchable. When it comes to iOS DAWs I have literally tried them all.
